No Exceptions To The Rule Of Law
Stephen Harper has waded into a controversy over arrests made during Ramadan (see "One Law for all Canadians, say Harper", by Robert Sibley, Ottawa Citizen, page 6), and said that "In fairness, this is an operational matter for the RCMP and I wouldn't pretend to know all the details and aspects of the story. But the general approach that this government would expect to see (from law enforcement agencies) is that the law, our important laws, are enforced every day of the year."
What happened in this story is that RCMP officers and the Ottawa Police arrested two men during Ramadan and charged them with terrorism-related offences. The next day a meeting was held with the muslim community and an apology was offered about the timing of the arrests.
Well, I totally agree with the Prime Minister.
But...
What about Caledonia? For years, the Ontario Provincial Police have not enforced the law against native occupiers - in fact, turning parts of Caledonia into Canada's first no-go area. Where has Mr. Harper been during the blockades, the violence, the threats, etc for the last 4 years plus? To make matters worse, the Conservative chose Julian Fantino, who ran the OPP during this period, to run in the Vaughn by-election.
So, is it really one law for all Canadians?
